LightTools is an optical simulation tool, which can simulate any illumination design efficiently. It has many libraries to create reflectors, lenses, optical fibers, light pipes, light sources, etc. Any 3D design can be easily created in the LightTools. SolidWorks, which is well known in 3D modeling, has been integrated with LighTools to transfer the 3D model from SolidWorks to LightTools and vice versa. External link

To implement the daylighting systems or any other illumination system, efficient software is needed to see the real results. For that purpose, LightTools is preferred. I am using LightTools in my research, which is related to daylighting systems, illumination systems, and hybrid systems.

Radiance is a suite of programs for the analysis and visualization of lighting in design. The primary advantage of Radiance over simpler lighting calculation and rendering tools is that there are few limitations on the geometry or the materials that may be simulated. Radiance is used by architects and engineers to predict illumination, visual quality and appearance of innovative design spaces, and by researchers to evaluate new lighting and daylighting technologies. Lightcalc is a lighting software. Upon entering the information (e.g., ceiling height, room width and length, counter height, color pallette, etc.), LightCalc goes to work determining the appropriate footcandle level, fixture spacing, and it will suggest a ceiling layout for your fixtures. It determines the overall reflectance in the room; finds the proper footcandle level for general, task, and art lighting; adjust the footcandle level for dark to light rooms and client age; determines the proper spacing needed; uses both Inverse Square Law and Lumen methods; suggests a grid layout for general lighting; art lighting.
