Brief Bio

Prof. Dr. Ir. Shady Attia is Professor of Sustainable Architecture and Building Technology and Head of the Sustainable Building Design (SBD) Lab at the University of Liège, Belgium. His research focuses on the decarbonization and climate resilience of buildings and cities. His work spans six interconnected areas: zero-carbon buildings and renovation, whole-life carbon and circular construction, building performance simulation and artificial intelligence, climate-resilient buildings and thermal comfort, urban climate and heat resilience, and sustainable design decision support. Combining building physics, simulation, life cycle assessment, urban climate modeling, and AI, he develops methods, tools, and decision-support frameworks for high-performance, low-carbon, circular, and climate-adaptive built environments. His research addresses challenges ranging from building-scale energy and carbon performance to urban heat, energy flexibility, and interactions between buildings, occupants, and energy systems. Through interdisciplinary and international research, he works at the interface of architecture, engineering, and environmental science, translating scientific evidence into practical strategies for architects, engineers, researchers, industry, and policymakers working toward carbon-neutral and climate-resilient buildings and cities.
