Ying-Chieh Chan
Brief Bio
Ying-Chieh Chan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at National Taiwan University, where she leads the Building Science Lab. Her research examines the relationships among buildings, people, and the environment, with the goal of improving both occupant well-being and building energy performance. Chan’s work integrates computational simulation, field measurements, and human-subject experiments to develop evidence-based approaches for sustainable, occupant-centered design. Her research areas include window views and visual comfort, daylighting and automated shading control, building thermal performance, indoor air quality, and urban microclimate. Her contributions include the development of methods for evaluating window-view quality, including the View Clarity Index, as well as studies using virtual reality and ray-casting techniques to investigate dynamic outdoor views from an occupant’s perspective. She has also developed advanced approaches for daylight modeling, glare protection, shading control, thermal-load prediction, kitchen ventilation, and outdoor thermal comfort in urban spaces. Chan earned a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Purdue University, an M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from National Taiwan University. She teaches courses in conceptual design, building physics, sustainable design, architectural design, civil engineering, sustainability, resilience, and academic research methodology. Her work has been published in journals including Building and Environment, Scientific Reports, Solar Energy, Energy and Buildings, Indoor Air, Journal of Building Engineering, and Urban Climate. She has received multiple honors, including National Taiwan University Outstanding Teaching Faculty Awards in 2025 and 2026, an ASCE Outstanding Reviewer Award, and recognition from Taiwan’s Ministry of Science and Technology.
